US Legislation Passes in the Senate

6 October 2008

WASHINGTON DC – The US Senate unanimously passed legislation this week that recognizes quality and affordable maternal health care as a basic human right. The legislation, introduced by Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) and Olympia Snowe (R-Maine) also calls on the US to make a stronger commitment to reducing maternal mortality both at home and abroad.

"More than 536,000 women die during pregnancy and childbirth every year," Lincoln said. "While the majority of deaths occur in developing countries, the United States has one of the highest maternal mortality rates among industrialized nations. This is not a problem we can or should ignore. A mother's health affects the health of her child, her family's well-being, and the productivity of a community. It's time we make maternal health a priority."

The US ranks 41st among 171 countries in the latest UN list ranking maternal mortality, with a maternal mortality ratio of 11 deaths per 100,000 live births, one of the highest rates among industrialized nations. The resolution by the Senate calls for a stronger commitment to reducing maternal mortality through more effective investment and participation in global initiatives. It also recognizes that access to quality and affordable health care is essential for improving maternal health.
