Commitment to Progress for Mothers, Newborns, and Children

The UN Secretary General and the President of the UN General Assembly hosted a High-level Event on the Millennium Development Goals at the UN Headquarters in New York on 25 September 2008. This Event, which took place at the halfway point to the target date of 2015 for achievement of the MDGs, provided a forum for world leaders to discuss progress, highlight gaps, and commit to specific steps needed for achievement of the MDGs. On the same day, a special event to highlight maternal health was held: Commitment to Progress for Mothers, Newborns, and Children. |

The Goal: To bring together Heads of State, heads of UN agencies, senior government officials, civil society organizations, foundations and private sector companies to kick start a global re-commitment to achieve MDGs 5 (maternal health) and 4 (newborn and child health).
Co-hosts: President Michelle Bachelet of Chile, President Tarja Halonen of Finland, and President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete of Tanzania.
Organizers: FCI-Women Deliver, International Planned Parenthood Federation, Partnership for Maternal Newborn and Child Health, Save the Children-UK, White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood, World Vision International , with support from United Kingdom Department for International Development – DfID, Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation - Norad, and Australian Permanent Mission to the United Nations.
